About Us

Hawthorn Environmental Services Ltd helps people and businesses to reduce their environmental impact and become more sustainable by offering solutions that work for them and help the environment.

In the way that we conduct our own lives and business and the way we support our customers, Hawthorn Environmental Services Ltd aim to be part of the environmental solution and not part of the problem. The Directors Carol and Geoff Long are using our home as a case study to try environmental technologies and alternatives to mainstream products and we will share our experience at Recent Projects.

Carol Long is Director and Environmental Consultant at Hawthorn Environmental Services Ltd. Her original degree was in Biological Sciences, specialising in Environmental Resource Management. Carol qualified as an Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment in 2005 through the University of Bath. She then gained a Masters Degree in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies in 2008 and as part of her MSc Carol completed a thesis on the barriers to uptake of crop-based construction products.

Carol became an accredited Domestic Energy Assessor in 2008 and has produced Energy Performance Certificates for rental properties in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey. She trained with BRE and is accredited with Stroma.

Carol Long has nearly 30 years experience in the Civil Service, working in both science and policy roles in Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food).  During this part of her career Carol has worked on water and sewerage emergencies; environmental regulation of chemicals, including veterinary medicines and pesticides; and laboratory analysis of soils.

Carol has also conducted ecological surveys at a number of nature reserves and sites of conservation importance for the site owners.

She has recently completed work for the National Non-Food Crops Centre in York and a project for a local climate change consultancy.

She is a member of Renewable Building, Renewable Building is a thematic working group established by the National Non-Food Crops Centre to promote the wider use of bio-based building materials.
